I'm not even kidding when I say I think about this every day. My group of writers friends and I are currently writing phase 3. I write for Murdoc, so my heart clenches in my chest every time it dawns on me that Murdoc doesn't know how to express himself or how to be a good person, unless it's in song form. His lyrics are so deep and meaningful and emotional and vulnerable. A side of him he only shows in the form of lyrics, because it's safe. If anyone asked him why he wrote the lyrics down, he could easily tell them "It doesn't mean anything significant to my life. It's a reflection of whatever the listener experiences while listening." In reality he's bottling everything up inside and pretending to be strong and stable enough to power through the day's

I had heard this sometime in during my childhood and had completely forgotten until NOW this moment. Life is strange.

Everytime I play this song, I’m instantly transported back to my high school days. Specifically this one day in Year 9 nearing the end of the day on a Friday. I was in art class about 30mins before the bell goes and it was raining outside, I was sitting in a separate room with my friend from the rest of the class and these two Year 12 (senior) girls who were doing their own thing. I’m a lot happier now than I was then and I’m so grateful for the impact Gorillaz have had on my life : )

Personally if I had to choose, I'd choose this storyboard video still. XD I agree with others that this would have made an amazing video. They could recreate it framed as a flashback sort of reminiscent tale of the Plastic Beach. It's funny, I think this got scrapped because it's large- and wouldn't fit neatly in between Melancholy Hill after Stylo. I think it's open enough to give it another look. :)

+Leon Zilla lol, I don't doubt it, but I don't really listen to the metal genre. Honestly, I'm more of an orchestral guy, myself (which can admittedly get pretty aggressive). What I really mean is it's super impressive how these guys nailed that off-putting tone so well despite the fact that the singer's pitch barely fluctuates and he shows just about 0 emotion.

Chucky Hagelo Oh, my word, you're right. No, but I was listening to Hurt by NiN the other day (and a couple other songs) and talking to my brother about what it meant to us. One of the interesting things we both noticed was Reznor's inflections while singing Hurt, how raspy and almost dry it sounded. And we speculated that maybe it was done on purpose to convey the idea that the singer is not some person sitting behind a mic in a recording studio with some angelic voice. It sounds more like what you'd hear drifting through an alley from the parched throat of a homeless person who'd lost everything. But the concept being portrayed through it is that what happened to the singer can happen to anyone and everyone. And it is - we're all being consumed by our greed, pride, and self-destruction. Anyway (sorry, I kinda ranted there), my point being - Trent Reznor is an incredible vocalizer and a brilliant musical artist.

No way was this song made 11 years ago, this is the best song I've heard.

I've been listening to the Gorillaz on repeat whenever I can since 2015 I played there songs more then a thousand times, I thought they weren't gonna release amazing music like they're past stuff and the year I stopped being able to listen to music they released this album and it's I can only be happy that they didn't change like most group to stay in the frame of fame, I suggest if listening to man research by them

This came out when I was in college. Then I heard my 11 year old listening to this a couple weeks ago I was like what the hell????!!!!! 😅

Jamie Hewlett did such a great job with the storyboard i cannot imagine the frustration of it being cut by the studios by fear of not making enough money.

Easily one of my most favorite songs

I met gorillaz thanks to my mother, I thank her every day for making my musical taste so good

I feel kind of upset that this was one of their last big parts of the story, since after all of this they gave up on the plan and decided to make everything go back to normal days 7 years later in Humanz, I just feel like there could have been so much more. phase 2-3 where my favorite (Demon days-Plastic beach).

@@benno._.72 Whether they weren't getting enough budget or inspiration, I think we as the fans should make some kind of petition or call for attention. Sad thing is, from what I've observed so far, the Gorillaz fandom seems to be separated by two kinds fans. One would be those who only listen to the songs, and second would be those who genuinely care about the story. I think the small portion of the latter don't call out to the creators enough, and I kinda wish they did. I would be happy if they were able to make even just a comic series. I'm fine if there wasn't a movie as long as we get to see the characters and their stories get concluded somewhat.

update, i found out today that he died back in october. rest in peace.

Something deep inside kinda makes me happy that it was scrapped and it's just the storyboard. Somehow it fits for the mood(?) of the song.

Me too. I'd like to see what it would have been animated, but you're right about it fitting the mood - if you listen to the instrumentals closely and the tone of the vocals throughout, it's actually incredibly simple, making it all the more powerful. Being a simple storyboard with...unnerving colors absolutely complements that feeling.

I would rather say that it fits to the atmosphere to the song. Even though that the song is sung really monotone it also sounds highly aggressive and the storyboard captures that perfectly

Nahhh just read why - Rhinestone Eyes was intended to be the next single off Plastic Beach after On Melancholy Hill, and storyboarding began even before the On Melancholy Hill video was officially released. In interviews this year Jamie had indicated that the videos would form a continuous story (including, in particular, the interview with Time Out Beirut in which he said it was intended the story would play out over 'four or five' videos). Rhinestone Eyes was already being promoted in the USA from early June via Gorillaz official promo partners All Access and promo CDs had been pressed and circulated. However, before the video went into production EMI indicated to Gorillaz that they would not fund it. This was probably down to poor chart performance of Stylo and On Melancholy Hill, and a lack of backing for Rhinestone Eyes. Plastic Beach itself has, even considering the overall downturn in music sales over the last 10 years, performed poorly commercially in comparison with the s/t album and Demon Days. (although it has sold around 265,600 copies in the UK, 351,179 copies in the USA, and well over 1 million copies worldwide).
